McCandless’ attitude toward a flawed society Quote 4

"The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life, Ron, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-shelter style of life that will at first appear crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty." (Letter to Ron from Alex (Chris McCandless) while he was living in North Dakota.)

  1. This was McCandless's own words and this was how he went upon life. He believed that everyday should be an adventure and if it is not then you should make it one. Everyday life for him wasn't an adventure so he decided to go and live on the road. This was an adventure for him and a way for him to experience all of nature's beauty. He liked the feeling of not knowing when he would have another meal or a place to sleep. If it was up to McCandless then everybody would live this way. He believed that they would truly get the full experience of life and actually be able to enjoy life. When McCandless gave this advice to Ron and he followed it. This showed that McCandless's advice was crazy and that it was realistic. He lived with a passion of not letting society control his life. McCandless was on a mission to get this full experience out of life and he wasn't going to let society stop him. McCandless felt that if he was completely dependent on himself and nothing else, that he would be able to enjoy nature and everything she has to offer. This would be true happiness and a thing of beauty for McCandless.
