Krakauer’s attitude toward McCandless Quote 2

"As a young man, i was unlike McCandless in many important regards; most notably, I possessed neither his intellect nor his lofty ideals. But I believe we were similarly affected by the skewed relationships we had with out fathers. And i suspect we had a similar intensity, a similar heedlessness, a similar agitation of the soul."

  1. Here Krakauer compares himself to McCandless in a few different ways. Krakauer explains that McCandless is an intelligent person that could think well and once he had his mind on something there was no stopping him. Both Krakauer and McCandless didn't have the best relationships with their fathers and this could possibly play a huge role on why they do the extreme things they do. They put their own lives at risk and don't even think twice. They both were very intense about what they did. Krakauer respects McCandless for having this trait because he knows what its like to want to do something so bad and do everything you can to do that one thing. Krakauer was thought to be crazy when he wanted to climb ice caps and McCandless got the same reaction when he wanted to go in the middle of Alaska and live off the land. They are both very similar and Krakauer respects this and can relate to how McCandless felt about his trip.
