McCandless’ attitude toward a flawed society Quote 2

"He always wore shoes without socks-just plain couldn't stand to wear socks. But McDonald's has a rule that employees have to wear appropriate footwear at all times. That means shoes and socks. Chris would comply with the rule, but as soon as his shift was over, bang!- the first thing he'd do is peel those socks off. I mean the very first thing. Kind of like a statement, to let us know we didn't own him., I guess."

  1. McCandless didn't like the feeling that society had control over him. This simple gesture of taking his socks off immediately after his shift showed that he was his own person. At work he was going to follow the rules but when he was on his own time, he was going to do whatever he wanted. McCandless wasn't going to let that fact that he had to wear socks at work effect whether he wore them outside of work. McCandless was against society's rule and this was a small but meaningful event that made him an individual and showed that he stuck to his personal morals.
